Nutritional Supplements in Treating ASD / John Hicks, MD and Betsy Hicks
The goal of supplementation is to provide each person with the specific vitamins, minerals and co-factors that are needed. Not all supplements are made the same. It is important to know what additives are in your supplements because certain additives can cause oxidative stress. Learn which forms of vitamins, minerals and fatty acids are the most absorbed and utilized and how each system requires specific supplements that help to support its function. Dr. Hicks will also talk about glandulars that are used successfully in rebuilding glands. This lecture is not aimed at endorsing certain brands. It’s simply to help the consumer make wise choices. Dr. Hicks will also present another program at 11:00am on Friday and Betsy Hicks will present on Special Diets at 1:00 pm on Thursday. |

Prioritizing Therapies for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders / Patricia S. Lemer, MEd, NCC
Choosing how to allocate financial and time resources for a child with an autism spectrum disorder can be daunting. Parents search out experts who all have something to offer. Experts are certain that their therapies can help a child toward recovery, but are there other disciplines that can work synergistically with theirs? How do parents decide upon an order of business when every child is unique? If a therapist suggests that a family start with an expert from another discipline, maybe the family will never return. If only guidelines were available for educators, healthcare professionals and parents, then all could work collaboratively in the child’s best interest. In this session, Ms. Lemer, a counselor with over 30 years experience, will offer a road map for both families and therapists. She will concentrate on how to pinpoint what is right for a particular child, by looking at his/her history, determining minimal, but necessary testing needs, and how to find competent professionals. Finally, she will focus on how a child’s needs change with age, and how to adjust priorities into adolescence and adulthood.

Autism as a Minimata Disease Variant; Aspartame: An Unrecognized Co-Factor? Kenneth Stoller, MD
Minamata Disease is a myriad of neurological and neurodevelopmental symptoms stemming from the pollution of Minamata Bay, Japan with 27 tons of organic mercury by the Chisso Corporation. The corporation denied responsibility and continued to pollute waterways for three decades. While research findings showing mercury was the cause of Minamata disease were concealed by the corporation, a number of committees, of which Chisso Corporation employees were members, were formed to research the problem. The committees denied this information and refuted the direct link of mercury. Today, the causes of autism and several neurodevelopmental disorders have been linked to mercury; The artificial sweetener aspartame, once considered a new chemical warfare agent by the US military, has resulted in an enormous toll in illness, disability and death. Methylcobalamin’s Rise from Pauper to Prince / James Neubrander, MD, FAAEM
Methylcobalamin (methyl-B12) was essentially unknown to the clinical world until the 1980’s when it found its way into the test tube world of science by way of rat brains and human lymphocytes. By the 1990’s methyl-B12 started to be seen in a few clinical studies using human subjects. Then in March of 2002, Dr. Neubrander administered his first dose of methylcobalamin to a child with autism and the child showed remarkable clinical improvements. Today, only four years after this amazing discovery, methyl-B12, in concert with methionine synthase, and possibly in some way acting independently of this enzyme, has powerfully changed tens of thousands of children’s lives! Key protocol components are necessary for clinicians and parents to optimize their results. Critical factors include the proper route and frequency of administration, the use of the most concentrated stock solution possible, the disallowance of confounding variables to be introduced during the initiation phase of methylcobalamin treatment, and the utilization of the most sensitive and specific evaluation tool available. There are 135 commonly reported responses that methyl-B12 is associated with, the three primary ones being higher executive function, increased speech and language, and greater socialization and emotion. Scientific validation for methyl-B12’s clinical benefit is obvious from Dr. Richard Deth’s work with methionine synthase and methylation pathways, and from Dr. Jill James’ work with methylation – transsulfuration biochemistry and oxidative stress biomarkers. Though science is not yet willing to crown methyl-B12 the king of biomedical treatments for autism, it definitely holds the status of Prince. |

A Treatment Protocol for Autism Spectrum Disorders / Dietrich Klinghardt, MD, PhD
The recent scientific literature points more and more to the core of the autism puzzle: the mercury induced brain, gut and immune system injury. Most other biological and psychiatric consequences are secondary, yet - nonetheless - have to be addressed carefully in a natural order. The effective mercury removal program requires more then just biochemical intervention: carefully selected energy medicine methods, avoidance of electrosmog, selection of adjunctive homotoxicological homeopathics and more.Several other issues have to be recognized and resolved:
1. Synergistic other toxins (including pesticides, testosterone and zinc, biotoxins from parasites, Lyme disease and molds); 2. Food intolerances; 3. Autonomic dysfunction and other energetic abnormalities (blocked meridians, scars, chakras, etc.); 4. Dental malocclusion and other structural problems; 5. Biochemical deficiencies based on genetic or nutritional problems; 6. Electrosmog; 7. Psycho-spiritual problems (often caused by transpersonal ancestral trauma). By addressing these issues simply and biologically remarkable improvements are probable.
Dr. Klinghardt will also present at 5:00pm on Friday.

The Effects of Synergistic Toxicities and Genetic Susceptibilities on the Toxic Effects of Inorganic and Organic Mercury Compounds: The Relationship to Autism and Related Disorders. / Boyd Haley, PhD
The retention and toxicity of mercury and mercury compounds is known to be enhanced by the presence of other synergistic factors that may or may not have toxicity by themselves. Such non-toxic compounds include antibiotics, a milk diet and male hormone. Toxic compounds such as other heavy metals (lead, aluminum) are well known to dramatically increase the toxicity of low levels of mercury exposures. Therefore, unless a total knowledge of the exposure to synergistic toxins are known, it is impossible to define a safe level of mercury exposure for humans in the environment. An evaluation of the considerations of synergistic toxicities, genetic susceptibility and infant age will be presented along with the basic biochemical and cellular level research that strongly supports the thimerosal causation of autism hypothesis. Integrative Medicine and Autism Spectrum Disorders / John Hicks, MD
The general goal of integrative medicine is to treat the body, mind and spirit. The process involves evaluation of all systems; organs, and cellular functions. The goal is for the systems to function at optimum levels. This is achieved by addressing both mental and environmental issues which impact us each day. Dr. Hicks will explain how the body functions as a whole and cautions that overly aggressive treatments may impede the healing process. We are complex energetic systems whose intentions and beliefs impact our ability to heal. Dr. Hicks will look at ways in which one begins and carries out an integrative evaluation as well as highlighting some of the interventions that Integrative Medical practices have found successful. |

Evidence for Mercury Toxicity in Autism through Urinary Porphyrin Profiling / Robert Nataf, MD, Featured Speaker
Abstract: Heavy metal toxicity, particularly mercury, has been implicated in the etiology of autism and related spectrum disorders. Despite several studies addressing heavy metal exposure through elemental analysis and epidemiology, direct evidence for mercury toxicity in autism is lacking. We report a study of urinary porphyrins, markers of heavy metal exposure, in 269 children with neurodevelopmental disorders. The specific porphyrin profile in a subset of children with autistic syndrome points to mercury toxicity in this disorder. |

Achieving optimal health utilizing sensitivity reduction technique (SRT), acupressure and Cranial Osteopathy/ Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO
Are you tired of avoiding gluten and casein? Does your child have side effects from their nutritional supplements? Drug-free, non-invasive help is available. Sensitivity reduction technique (SRT) eliminates symptoms from almost all food and environmental sensitivities, allowing individuals to eat meals full of variety. Sensitivities may be traditional IgE or IgG mediated allergies, but most symptoms are not a result of traditional allergic response. Many allergy sufferers do not test positive for RAST, ELISA or skin testing, yet they have many allergic symptoms. An allergic sensitivity could be any substance, organic or inert, that causes a disruption in someone’s electromagnetic energy. Traditional Chinese Medicine balances subtle energy flow on meridians with the use of acupressure (or acupuncture). SRT changes the body’s perception of the sensitivity utilizing acupressure on meridians. Achieving this balance eliminates allergy symptoms that are traditional and bio-energetic. Structural anatomic balance directly relates to optimal bodily function as well, thus defining the Osteopathic concept. Cranial Osteopathy is a direct extension of Osteopathic treatment including balancing techniques not only for the spine and extremities, but also for the cranium and sacrum. Osteopathic physicians have utilized Cranial Osteopathy to correct children’s birth trauma, lactation dysfunction, crossed-eyes (strabismus), and many more. A child’s optimal healing environment is the pinnacle of balance bio-energetically and anatomically. We will discuss how this balance can be achieved comfortably and gently. Oxalate in Autism: A Metabolic Toxin with Surprising Effects on the Sulfur System and Development / Susan Owens, MAIS, RA
In this introduction to the use of Low Oxalate Diet in Autism, Mrs. Owens will review what is known about oxalate and how that might help us understand why children on a diet of reduced oxalates are improving globally, with major changes in gross motor skills, fine motor skills, expressive speech and cognition. Many children, after other interventions failed, are obtaining normal gut function with the resolution of constipation, diarrhea, yeast issues, dysbiosis, or abnormal distention. Others are losing issues with pain (which had precipitated bad behavior or self-injury) and others are losing urinary problems like urgency and frequency. Some who had experience growth delays are finally growing. Some of these changes may be explained by the way that oxalate interacts with the sulfur system. Mrs. Owens will review the science, which may help us understand how the diet is producing these changes and how this may tie in with known scientific findings about autism. |
