SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT! The US Autism & Asperger Association Conference Committee announced today the addition of two award-winning films to the conference schedule.
Opening up the conference, at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday evening, August 24, is the Oregon Premiere of the award-winning film,Swim Team. Following the film, there will be a Q&A with Lara Stolman, the producer and director of Swim Team. Conference attendees will get a sneak preview of the film before its premiere on PBS' award-winning nonfiction showcase POV.
SWIM TEAM - What would you do if your community gave up on your child? In New Jersey, the parents of a boy on the autism spectrum take matters into their own hands. They form a competitive swim team, recruiting diverse teens on the spectrum and training them with high expectations and zero pity. What happens next alters the course of the boys' lives. SWIM TEAM chronicles the extraordinary rise of the Jersey Hammerheads, capturing a moving quest for inclusion, independence and a life that feels winning.
THE BUDDY SYSTEM - Dogs are transforming the lives of children on the autism spectrum. THE BUDDY SYSTEM tells the intimate stories of three families touched by autism, who experience a remarkable change when a specially trained autism assistance dog comes into their lives. Autism assistance dogs not only become best friends or "buddies" with the children they serve, but they are also powerful therapeutic tools who help kids on the spectrum develop essential social skills, heighten emotional empathy, and level the playing field so they can finally feel like they belong.
