Toxicants implicated in Autism Spectrum Disorders

Toxicants implicated in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) include pesticides such as organophosphates and pyrethrins, phthalates used as plasticizers, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), solvents, toxic waste sites, air pollutants, pharmaceuticals such as acetaminophen, and heavy metals.

In addition, a number of genetic factors related to chemical detoxification have also been associated with increased incidence of autism. Out of 111 scientific papers evaluating influence of toxic chemicals and ASD, 84 (75.7%) of the papers indicated a relationship.

Dr. William Shaw will present "Toxic Chemical Exposure in Autism" at the 2016 USAAA 11th Annual World Conference in Louisville, Kentucky, August 18-20, 2016.

Dr. Shaw is board certified in the fields of clinical chemistry and toxicology by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry. Before he founded The Great Plains Laboratory, Inc., Dr. Shaw worked for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Children's Mercy Hospital, University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Medicine, and Smith Kline Laboratories. He is the author of Biological Treatments for Autism and PDD, originally published in 1998 and Autism: Beyond the Basics, published in 2009. He is also a frequent speaker at conferences worldwide. He is the stepfather of a child with autism.

Sesame Street and Autism: See Amazing In All Children

Almost every school and university in the country has students with autism. While the diagnosis is common, public understanding of autism is not. The lack of understanding around the condition contributes to discrimination, verbal abuse, and even physical violence.

While the differences between people with autism and their peers may seem significant, children share something far more important: unique qualities and talents that make the world an interesting place. That's why Sesame Workshop created Sesame Street and Autism: See Amazing in All Children, a nationwide initiative aimed at communities with children ages 2 to 5. Frank Campagna will present Sesame Street and Autism: See Amazing in All Children at the 2016 USAAA 11th Annual World Conference in Louisville, Kentucky, August 18-20, 2016.

Frank Campagna is a twenty-two year children's television veteran and is the Assistant Vice President of Special Project Production for Sesame Workshop. Frank is also the author of the wildly popular autism blog "“Autism Daddy" where he talks about the realities of raising a child with special needs.

Autism Wandering Bill Passes Senate

On July 14, the Senate unanimously passed Kevin and Avonte's Law (S. 2614 ). The bill, led by Sens. Charles Schumer (D-NY), Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA) would expand existing federal programs that provide grants to assist in the design, establishment, and operation of location tracking technology to locate people prone to wandering, including children with autism and adults with dementia.

The bill would also provide funding for preventative measures including training and resources aimed at parents, school personnel, first responders, and other members of the public.
