US Autism & Asperger Association Event
Becomes Most-Viewed Autism Conference in the World
Salt Lake City, UT, October 13, 2010 – The US Autism & Asperger Association (USAAA) 5th Annual World Conference, held October 1-3, 2010, became the most-viewed autism conference in the world. While there were over 700 attendees each day at the conference in St. Louis, Missouri, over 35,000 people watched the event online. This was the first ever autism and Asperger conference to be streamed live in its entirety.
“Going into the final week of the conference, we knew that the venue would be filled to maximum capacity,” said Lawrence P. Kaplan, PhD, CEO of USAAA. “For this reason, we decided to broadcast the entire conference live on Ustream to reach an additional audience of families that are affected by autism spectrum disorders. What we didn’t realize was that the conference would be watched by over 35,000 people.”
According to Steve Janak, President of ZenWorksProductions, each of the 35,000 online logins averaged approximately two viewers at the computer, meaning the event was televised to potentially 70,000 people or more. “We were watching the online chats during the sessions and there were multiple families viewing from one location,” said Mr. Janak.
“Many parents are just unable to leave their home due to the extreme severity of their children affected by autism,” said Dr. Kaplan. “We decided that streaming the event would be an effective way to reach those families.”
Participants who attended the conference were from thirty-four U.S. states and six countries. “There is nothing that replaces the overall experience of actually attending the event,” said Dr. Kaplan. “For those who could not attend the conference in person, we were proud to be able to broadcast over 17 hours of information provided by world-renowned autism experts over the three day period.”
