Dear Parents and Professionals:
Autism treatment as we know it today is in jeopardy, and I’m asking for your help to save it. If your child or someone you know depends on compounded medications, please read on.
A group of powerful senators has written legislation that will severely restrict patient access to compounded medications and place new burdens on prescribers. Children with autism would be most severely impacted because one provision of this legislation prohibits sterile compounding from non-sterile ingredients. Under this provision, compounded methyl-B12 injections would be banned, something that many of you depend upon and something, when stopped, leads to regression in most of my children within 2 to 6 months!
In my many years of practice, I have seen thousands of patients lives improved by methyl-B12 injections and other compounded medicines that we now risk losing. These medications are absolutely critical for autistic children, as they have contributed to significantly improved health and the diminishing of autistic symptoms. Through the use of doctor-prescribed compounded medication, many of these children have been able to improve their communication, social and motor skills and assimilate into mainstream school settings.
My patients – your children – simply cannot afford to let the legislation stand.
The autism community and the pharmacy profession have made great strides to stall the legislation, but the fight is not over. Four months after we stopped giving Fridrik chelation therapy, the question has become: What other steps can we take to augment the healing process of a non-verbal autistic boy? The answer, like chelation, has come from an unlikely source—the Navy. Chelation therapy, which was developed by the U.S. Navy during World War II to purge sailors exposed to metals when they were working in the bowels of ships, has an older technological brother. It is hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT).

BRIAN ROSENBERG SUFFERS from autism. And while that term can describe a wide range of developmental problems, says Jon Rosenberg, Brian's father, "My son is at the severe end of the spectrum." At that level of severity, he explains, "Kids don't know how to imitate, and that's how most kids learn. It took weeks to teach my son to get himself a glass of water, months to teach him how to use a fork and spoon." Brian has learned these skills by working one on one with a behavioral therapist, day in and day out, since his diagnosis. Behavioral therapy for autism can cost as much as $60,000 per year, a serious financial challenge for a family whose insurance won't cover it. Indeed, many families have no coverage for the services that autistic children need most. The Rosenbergs are lucky: Jon's employer, the software giant Microsoft (MSFT: 30.78, +0.03, +0.1%), covers behavioral therapy as part of its health-benefits package. But that wasn't always the case — and the story of how the policies changed at the Redmond Empire is instructive for any family facing a costly medical problem.

The mercury, autism debacle: How stupid do they think we are?

Last weekend the Sixth International Meeting for Autism Research took place in Seattle. The meeting claimed to draw the top 900 autism researchers and scientists from around the world. One of the key participants was Dr. Eric Fombonne of Montreal Children's Hospital at McGill University. Dr. Fombonne, a psychiatrist, presented his research on mercury. His work involved testing the blood and hair of 147 children. Roughly half of his subjects were diagnosed with autism and half were considered neurologically typical controls. He found no difference in mercury levels in the patients hair or blood. The first question one might ask is why a psychiatrist is considered qualified to do toxicological work. Most parents are concerned about the mercury exposure that their children received as newborns and infants from mandatory vaccines.

Vaccine Induced Autism

It’s a controversial topic that many medical professionals won't touch. Can childhood vaccinations be the cause of Autism in some children? We sat down with one local family who shared their story on how they believe their two children developed Autism after they were vaccinated. Barbara and Butch Labrecque look through picture of their kids and can’t help but wonder if they only knew what they know now. Their first son Jonny was born a normal and healthy boy, very strong and very alert. But, after Jonny received his four month shots he became very ill with chronic diarrhea.

TIP of the week - Negotiation Tips
Choose your battles, but most importantly the negotiation must be a "win-win" situation for all.
Know what type of individual you are dealing with by researching the doctor's schooling and experience. Call the office and ask, or review information online from accreditation boards and other reputable organizations.
Know that a dominant character is very competitive and almost always strives to win in any negotiations.

Media interest helping to improve autism awareness

Public awareness of autism and Asperger syndrome is increasing as media focus on the conditions strengthens, the National Autistic Society (Nas) has said. The Nas, which works with government bodies to protect the interests of those with autism, believes that greater coverage of cases of autism in the media could even help earlier diagnosis."There does seem to be more about autism in the media generally and I think people are going to pick up on that," explained Laura Slade, the Nas helpline manager.

EDM 1359: British MPs call for action on Autism

(London,UK) Parliamentarians of all parties in the House of Commons are currently signing an early day motion (EDM 1359)calling for decisive action on autism in the United Kingdom. Early Day Motion 1359 was tabled by the highly influential MP for Ilford South, Mike Gapes who is Chair of the powerful Foreign Affairs Select Committee in the House of Commons in Westminster. The EDM states: "That this House notes that the Prime Minister met autism campaigner Ivan Corea, who presented a report on autism; backs the call of the Autism Awareness Campaign UK for the Government to undertake a 10 year EDM 1359: British MPs call for action on Autism Ivan Corea with Prime Minister Tony Blair programme of building specialist autism schools, building autism units in mainstream primary and secondary schools, tackling the failure of some secondary schools in bringing in educational strategies to deal with autistic children in a mainstream setting, providing access to further education and higher education, labour market opportunities for people with autism and tackling the whole question of bullying and autistic children; requests that the Government review the provision of recreational services for autistic children; and calls on the Government to launch a cohesive national strategy for autism."
